Knocking on Doors
It is no secret that I enjoy walking door-to-door listening to the concerns of the people I represent. This allows me the opportunity to look people in the eye and to let them know that I am accessible to address their concerns and available to answer any questions they might have. It is an all too familiar reaction of people to be shocked when I show up on their doorstep because no public official has been there before. That is why I do it – to make sure that citizens know that they have elected officials who are listening and working hard.
I am continuing this approach of listening as I campaign for Ohio Treasurer. Obviously I will not be able to knock on every door in the entire state, but I will knock on as many as I can.
A few weeks ago, I was knocking on doors in Richland County. Richland County has one of the highest unemployment rates in the state and is hurting financially. I knocked on the door of a retired General Motors worker who explained to me that, because of the economy, his son was forced to move to Indiana to find work. During our conversation, it was quite apparent that the gentleman was frustrated with the dwindling job opportunities available within his region of the state.
Unfortunately, this exodus of jobs is statewide. Jobs are simply disappearing; especially those of manufacturing and production. Throughout my walk, I heard story after story about how jobs have vanished or left Ohio. This needs to change.
As a legislator I am working hard to reverse this trend, and plan to do more when elected State Treasurer. The high tax rates and overall unfriendliness to small businesses in Ohio are deterrents to economic growth. I’ll knock on as many doors as I need to change this.
